In 1902, Carl Fredrick Malzahn moved his family to Perry, Oklahoma and opened a blacksmith shop with his sons Charlie and Gus. The business prospered, and with the advent of an oil boom, it became Charlie’s Machine Shop, specializing in repairs for the nearby oil fields.

In the late 1940’s Charlie Malzahn’s son Ed, a recent graduate with an engineering degree, had the idea to build a compact trenching machine to replace the pick and shovel work involved with installing residential utility services.

By 1949 Ed had produced the world’s very first service-line trencher – the Ditch Witch model DWP service-line trencher. It wasn’t an unwieldy giant like other trenchers of the day, it was small enough to work easily in confined areas, like backroads and alleys. Charlie’s Machine Shop became Charles Machine Works and the first seed of the worldwide Ditch Witch organization was planted.

Today, the Ditch Witch organization is a one-stop source for underground construction equipment. Introduced in 1990, the original Ditch Witch horizontal directional drill (HDD) has advanced based on industry changes and direct customer feedback, now including a lineup of 12 different units. The latest generation of Ditch Witch drills provides operators advanced, next-generation machines with innovative technology for improved performance, power and productivity.

The Ditch Witch organization also provides the industry’s widest range of downhole tooling options to help handle hard rock, mud, tree roots and dense ground. In addition to its lineup of quality HDD equipment, the organization also offers a range of other underground equipment, including trenchers, vibratory plows, backhoes, chains, teeth and sprockets, vacuum excavation systems and mini skid steers.

Ditch Witch products are an important part of the history of American industry. The Ditch Witch compact trencher has twice been named one of the “100 best American-made products in the world" by Fortune magazine. In 2002, American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) President Susan H. Kemp awarded the Ditch Witch organization a bronze landmark plaque. More recently, The Travel Channel recently recognized the company's dedication to homegrown products by featuring the Ditch Witch manufacturing facility on its program "Made in America," hosted by John Ratzenberger.

The Ditch Witch organization also provides extensive training in the field, at Ditch Witch dealerships, at the Ditch Witch training center in Perry, Oklahoma and most recently, online. With the Ditch Witch Certified Training program, the result is training that translates into safer operations and greater productivity for the customers who own and operate Ditch Witch equipment.

Beyond the products, everyone associated with the Ditch Witch brand is still driven by Ed’s original vision to answer customer needs with innovative, quality products. The organization follows one business philosophy: We’re In This Together. Everyone throughout the organization, from the office workers, engineers and manufacturing personnel, to sales and marketing and everyone in the worldwide dealership network, is dedicated to the success of those who purchase and use Ditch Witch equipment.

Handcrafted in Perry, Oklahoma, Ditch Witch products are supported by the Ditch Witch dealer network with over 175 locations worldwide.
